Too much competition for my keyword?

Let’s face it. If you’re reading this, you’re probably not the biggest internet marketing force on the planet yet. You likely don’t have the deep pockets to go toe-to-toe with the big boys for the top spot on Google ads. A good example is the keyword term “mesothelioma.” Lawyers love the heck out of getting cases related to it but you’d have to pay $23.65 PER CLICK to get the top spot for Pay Per Click ads.

Kids, don’t try that at home. Not yet anyway.

There’s a simple way to use Google to find out how much competition is out there for a certain keyword’s traffic. Here’s what you need to do. Pull out that keyword list you created using the keyword tool a few days ago. Take one of the terms and type into the Google search box bracketed in quotes like this:

“mesothelioma”

Hit enter.

The result tells you there are over 5.5 million unique web pages competing for a spot under natural listings – that’s the results area on the left side, which you don’t have to pay for. Too many. You’re likely never to get a listing with that term.

Now type in “mesothelioma directory.” Not as much traffic but only 38,000 competing pages. Now we’re getting somewhere. What you’re looking for is a keyword term that returns less than 10,000 competing pages. 5,000 or less would be even better.
