They generally moan about the consumption and materialism of the Christmas period. These views are nothing new. They date back to the beginning of the Progressive era in the late 19th century when intellectuals were suspicious about the newly-formed middle classes. They were mostly concerned about their spending habits and wanted to do everything possible to micromanage their lives.
This was a time when mass production for middle-and working-class people skyrocketed. Many items such as forks or artificial lighting were seen as luxuries in previous eras. But with mass production and an improved quality of life, people could now enjoy unprecedented amounts of leisure time and celebrate holidays in ways previous generations couldn’t.
In fact, the middle classes were living in ways that royalty couldn’t even dream of. We need to remember that holidays like Christmas can now be enjoyed by the masses thanks to a capitalist system that has made food hyper abundant and other amenities more affordable for the masses to enjoy.
To be sure, I don’t begrudge minimalists. Sometimes less is more. But what we should pause and reflect about is the level of opportunity afforded to us.
So be of good cheer and celebrate this Christmas holiday with your friends and family to the fullest.
