Market Your Podcast With The 800-Pound Gorilla

We’re not suggesting you actually employ the services of an 800-pound gorilla to market your podcast. Gorillas are notoriously poor employees and quite unpredictable as well. The 800-pound gorilla we’re referring to here is iTunes, the King of Podcast Directories. If you have a podcast desperately in search of new ears, it’s criminal negligence to not have it listed with iTunes.

The first step is to have a few shows in the can that are absolutely the best you can make them. The reason for this is on the odd chance they decide to feature you immediately on the front page. In that case, expect to be swamped with visitors, and you only get once chance to make that first impression. Don’t let it be laden with mumbles, feedback, and poor quality.

Not that the chances are good to be listed on the front page right out of the chute, but you never know. The mechanics of getting listed in iTunes to market your podcast to the world are simple. First you need an iTunes-friendly RSS feed, which is freely available at Feedburner.com. This is known in techno speak as “burning” your feed. Don’t worry. Nothing complicated. In layman terms, that means providing iTunes with an RSS link that tells them where it can find the audio files containing your podcast on your host.

After that, it’s a simple matter to navigate to the podcast directory in the iTunes store and click on the “Submit a Podcast” icon. Follow the instructions and, 24 or 48 hours later, you should be approved. You will be provided by iTunes with an URL link to post on your website so people can easily subscribe. Just like that your podcast will be there for all the world to listen to.

That, my friend, is the single best way to market your podcast today.
