Flipping websites for fun and profit – maybe

Call them day traders, scalpers, or hit-and-run investors. The investment world is ripe with strategies promoting short term ownership. Buy it. Hold it until a momentary glitch bumps the price upwards. Repeat. In real estate it’s called flipping. You buy a house on sale in need of renovation, do the work, and re-sell it for a profit.

But are you aware that there is also money to be made in flipping websites? For a sharp entrepreneur, this is a wide open field. The truth is, as high falutin’ and fancy as we all think the internet is, the thing is barely a toddler. There are thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of people who own a website and have absolutely no idea how to monetize it, which simply means to create an income stream. Maybe they don’t have the knowledge. Maybe they don’t have the time. But maybe they do have a nice little chunk of cyber real estate marked out – if only someone could swoop in and turn it around.

That’s where website flipping comes in. If you have a good eye for marketing, you could buy an underperforming website with traffic already in place. Put the pedal to the metal with your marketing plan, whatever that may be. Adsense, Adwords, develop a mailing list, solicit paid advertising, set up joint ventures, whatever you can think of. The point is to turn the traffic into paying customers. Once you have a few months under your belt of cash flow, the value of the website just shot up. Now you can turn it around and sell it for 10 to 12 months worth of the monthly income it generates.

Just like in the rest of the investment world, rinse and repeat your website flipping process. And like in the rest of the investment world, this is NOT a sure thing but the initial investment can be relatively low in many cases.
