Are you disciplined enough to be an entrepreneur?

Most people seem to think that working from home is the best thing in the world. Well, it is but that doesn’t mean it’s easy, especially if you made the transition from a traditional office environment. It takes three things – discipline, more discipline, and yet even more of that discipline stuff. The problem with the home office is there is no boss cracking the whip, passing through regularly to insure you’re not face down on the keyboard in a drooling, snoring sleep, or haven’t decided to devote your life to Facebook.

“Discipline is easy,” you scoff, “Give me a chance and you’ll see.”

If you’ve ever been amazed by how easy it is to fritter away your time at work, you can’t even begin to imagine how fast it will hemorrhage at home. Work outside regular hours, like when the family is home and good, solid work time can literally disappear.

So what can you do to insure you’ll keep your nose firmly applied to the grindstone? There’s no magic formula but here are three things that work for us:

1. Setup and maintain a quiet area of the house that is devoted to work, preferably behind a locked, soundproofed door.
2. The best part of working from home is you get to set your own hours BUT keep at least a somewhat regular schedule. Even better is to set actual hours and stick to it.
3. Take a shower, get dressed, and brush your teeth in the morning. Drive around the block once, if you must, to fool yourself into thinking you’ve driven to the office. The point of all this is to make some sort of effort to prepare your mind and body for work, even if it’s at home. Act like a slob and, chances are, you’ll put forth sloppy effort.

Do the preceding three things and you’ll be exhibiting that most elusive of qualities – discipline!
